Tough Time for Hungry Kids

After-school hours are a tough time for kids who come home to an empty house and are on their own until a parent returns from work later in the evening. Without supervision and something constructive to do, children are more likely to engage in risky behaviors.

The KIDS’ PANTRY is Arkansas’ only charitable out-of school meal program that provides economically disadvantaged youngsters with good food for daily meals  throughout the year.

PANTRY sites offer youngsters a variety of academic, athletic and enrichment activities in a safe, adult-supervised setting – and meals.

Providing youngsters with nutritious food for dinner meals, coupled with positive activities, these after school and summer programs significantly contribute to improved health and well-being, reduced behavior problems and improved school performance of children.

In 2009, more than 7,000 youngsters at risk from 5 to 16 years of age benefited from the KIDS’ PANTRY by receiving good food for daily dinner meals after school – and lunch and dinner meals during the summer.

Putting Good Food - and Your Dollars - to Good Use

This year’s economic events have caused an undeniable shift throughout the state. Thousands of individuals, many of whom never imagined they would ever struggle to feed their families, now find themselves looking for help from emergency food assistance programs as they work to get back on their feet. And in turn, current and new food programs are looking to Potluck for help in keeping their freezers full, shelves stocked – and in many cases, their doors open.

Recovering 4,510,000 pounds of nutritious food to date – an increase of 300,000 pounds from the same time last year – has enabled us to distribute more food to current agencies, add new KIDS’ PANTRY sites, kitchens and pantries – and share almost a tractor trailer load of meat with local and out of area food banks to help feed Arkansans at-risk throughout the state.

Potluck supporters – to include our agencies and incredible food donors – appreciate our unique approach to alleviating hunger; our long-standing commitment to distributing food free of charge to agencies feeding children and adults, and our continuous search for new ways to increase our effectiveness – and our efficiency.

We’re continually working to strengthen our ability to reduce hunger among children and adults throughout our community and state by developing strategies to increase food recovery, improve methods of distribution and expand hunger-relief programming while making the very best use of all of our resources – whether it’s food, funds or manpower.

By operating efficiently and streamlining wherever we can, it only costs five cents for Potluck to rescue and deliver a pound of food.

If you’re looking for an opportunity that will enrich and enhance your life by doing the same for others – please consider adding Potluck to your holiday giving – or investment portfolio.

We’re grateful for your generous support and wish you and yours a happy, healthy holiday season.
