POTLUCK – Food Rescue

Thursday, September 27  •  6 - 9 P.M.

Potluck Headquarters

621 W. Broadway, North Little Rock

Tickets are $50 each

Proceeds from this casual evening of jazz and dogs accompanied by an array of festive sides from some of Little Rock’s top restaurants (with wine and beer provided by Glazer’s), will be used to support food rescue, distribution and developing hunger-relief programs that complement our work.

During the first 6 months of 2012,

POTLUCK rescued 48.5 tons of fresh produce to include: Granny Smith and other apples – oranges, tangelos, mandalos, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries, grapes – 3,700 fresh fruit cups – kiwis, watermelon, cantaloupes, honey dews, musk melons, papayas, bananas, pineapples, lettuce, salad mix – 6,800 individually-boxed fresh green salads – tomatoes, kale, cabbage, green and purple hull peas, snap peas, green beans, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, squash, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, rhubarb, mushrooms, red/green peppers and onions – in addition to 99 tons of prepared, frozen and shelf stable fruit, vegetables – and 100% fruit juice.

Instead of going to waste, 188 tons of a wide variety of fruit and vegetables –along with over 1.7 million pounds of excess beef, poultry, fish, pork, dairy, shelf stable and other food was rescued and used to help feed seniors, children, working poor and homeless families throughout Pulaski County and in high needs and under-served communities in Camden, Dumas, Conway, Ward and Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Rescuing Every Available Pound

At a time of greater need, it’s more important than ever for POTLUCK to put every available pound of excess food to good use by getting it into the hands of those that need it the most. Our goal this year is to rescue and deliver over 4 million pounds of high quality food with an emphasis on increasing the recovery/distribution of nutritious fresh produce and protein-rich foods.

Each week, POTLUCK helps more than 7,500 Arkansans find their next meal. More than 96% of individuals we serve are children, seniors and working poor families. Many older Arkansans that have worked hard for most of their lives now find themselves needing emergency food for themselves and their families; our neighbors who sought help from food pantries or soup kitchens in the past have turned to them again to help meet their most basic dietary needs – and individuals who never thought they would need emergency food now find themselves turning to programs served by POTLUCK.

We look to a generous network of hundreds of food donors and financial donors to help fill our trucks, develop special hunger-relief programs and support our work in building strong, food-secure communities in high-need areas in central Arkansas and the state.

In the coming years, it will be necessary to build on our strong base of support to go even further on behalf of hungry Arkansans. POTLUCK has already taken an important first step in that direction when, in 2007, we found (and steadily outfitted) a highly functional and utilitarian “home” in North Little Rock that has increased our ability to provide even more food to partner organizations.

As Arkansas continues its climb to the top of the ladder as one of the poorest and hungriest states in the nation – rescuing millions of pounds of food from going to waste, so it can be used instead to feed children and adults – is logical, sensible and the right thing to do.

Blue Fish Hike II

Special thanks to Chef Peter Brave and everyone who supported the Blue Fish Hike II, his second 223-mile hike through the Ouachita Trail to raise funds and awareness on behalf of POTLUCK.

Blue Fish Hike II

We’re extremely grateful for Peter’s long-time friendship and passion for the organization’s unique mission and work. Since 1995, he’s provided his time and talent to help hundreds of kids at-risk, working poor and homeless families learn how to eat better for less by leading POTLUCK Nutrition Education Workshops and by spearheading and/or hosting fundraisers like cooking classes, dinners – in addition to hiking close to 500 miles – has personally helped raise over $100,000 on our behalf.
